Workshop description:
Is your library catalog in need of revitalization? During this 3-hour workshop, Kyle Banerjee and Laura Zeigen will combine hands-on exercises, small group discussions and activities, and lecture to help participants gain an understanding of the following:

  1. Overview of the options for creating catalog interfaces
  2. How the same catalog interface be achieved with different back-end solutions (Note! This is not intended to be prescriptive of one solution or another, but to give people a broad overview of the options out there). Fear not! We will not make you do any programming!
  3. Other resources (wikis, etc.) that people could use to enhance their catalogs.
  4. How to bring database results together - how do we combine results from different resources?
  5. What constitutes good user interface design in catalogs? How can you tell?
  6. What kinds of needs assessment could or should you be doing with your catalog?
  7. How usability testing can assist with both needs assessment and marketing.
  8. What usability testing does and does not measure.
  9. What is the process for evaluating a system or interface? How does one do the part of needs assessment that is usability testing?

Presenters:
Laura Zeigen, Systems and Web Development Librarian at Oregon Health & Science University, has been involved with Web interface and resources development, usability testing, and other systems support at the OHSU Library since 1997 and has more recently been exploring the implications of interface design for adult learners in the teaching and learning process. She currently serves on the Northwest Digital Archives Usability and Design Working Group. She earned her MLIS from University of Washington's iSchool in 2006 and her M.A. in History from Portland State University in 2005.
