Description:

This hands-on workshop will teach participants how to effectively use Google and other Internet search engines to locate information in multiple formats. Google's overwhelming popularity has left it part of the daily vernacular, and it is often the only resource consulted (i.e., "googled") by users searching the web for information. However, there are other search engines that possess useful features and capabilities not offered by Google, for instance Result Clustering and Expert Referrals. The first part of this workshop will address the basic features of Google and its brethren. Workshop participants will compare and contrast a variety of Internet search sites. The second part of this workshop will focus on using image and multimedia resources. Workshop participants will visit multimedia search engines and learn search strategies specific to finding digital images and multimedia content. Copyright issues will be discussed to better understand which items may be used freely and which may not. This workshop will also address popular presentation software (MS PowerPoint) and how to embed multimedia into a presentation. (This is not a design class for creating presentations or web pages, but some experience with HTML, graphics software, or presentation software would be useful if you plan to use the items for that purpose.)
