Description:

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) is pleased to announce four new Consumer Health Workshops for public librarians. These workshops are designed to assist public librarians with the growing demand for consumer health information. These classes are brought to you by the NN/LM and have also been approved for Medical Library Association Continuing Education (CE) contact hours.

Prescription for Success: Consumer Health on the Web.
9:00 - 12:00

This hands-on introduction to consumer health information will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, DIRLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. It will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information. http://nnlm.gov/mar/training/chi.html (3 hrs)

From Snake Oil to Penicillin: Evaluating Consumer Health Information on the Internet
1:30 - 4:30

Looking in All the Wrong Places: PubMed for Public Librarians.
9:00 - 12:00

This 3-hour hands-on class will cover basic and field searching, journal browser, single citation matcher, clipboard, history, and other features. It will also cover how to obtain full-text articles. Beyond an Apple A Day: Providing Consumer Health Information in the Public Library.
1:30 - 4:30

This hands-on class will cover the information seeking behaviors of consumers. It will also address the recommended core reference collection, as well as databases and newsletters/ periodicals. It will cover the reference interview, disclaimers, and privacy as well as networking with medical librarians. The class will introduce the students to the Medical Library Association and its local chapters. It will describe possible ways to market this service in a community. Presenter:

Gail Kouame is the Consumer Health Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), Pacific Northwest Region. The NN/LM is comprised of 8 regions across the United States and is funded by the National Library of Medicine to develop collaborations and promote awareness of and access to information resources for health professionals and the public. The Pacific Northwest Region serves 5 states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Ms. Kouame's focus is specifically on facilitating delivery of quality health information to the public through collaboration with: academic, hospital, and community libraries; health agencies and organizations; as well as community organizations, health advocacy groups, health ministries, and other mechanisms. Ms. Kouame received her Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Washington in 1999. She holds a B.A. in Sociology and Psychology from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Prior to becoming a librarian, she was a social worker in the healthcare field for 15 years.
