Digital Image Capture & Quality Control

9:00 – 12:00 Workshop
Workshop covers basic level information on scanning, image capture and
quality control activities for digital projects. Considers issues relating
to outsourcing of scan capture activities vs. in-house capture. Provides
an understanding of scanning basics, file formats, compression and color
management. Outcome: The ability to make informed digital scanning decisions.
Digital Project Infrastructure

1:00 – 4:00 Workshop
This workshop explores the infrastructure of digitization – equipment
options, in-house digitization vs. outsourcing, how long-range plans affect
equipment choices, and an examination of high-level workflow issues and
their impact for infrastructure planning. Leads to understanding of how
project size and scope affect infrastructure options and choices. Outcome:
The ability to evaluate the appropriateness of various scanning devices
for digitization projects.

Preserving Born Digital Material

As more and more content is created and maintained in digital formats
it is important to begin thinking about what to preserve and how to preserve
it. This workshop focuses on the issues of selecting an appropriate preservation
strategy for born digital material; the key issues in maintaining material
in a digital format; and the use of the OCLC Digital Archive and other
current preservation projects that are testing characteristics of permanent
trusted repositories. Provides an understanding of the concepts of content,
context, structure, reliability, and authenticity of digital material
and how they relate to preservation. Outcome: An understanding of the
available options for preservation of born digital material and an ability
to make appropriate preservation decisions for born digital material.
Grant Writing for Preservation and Digitization Projects

1:00 – 4:00 Workshop
This workshop is focused on preparing for and writing grants for digitization
and/or preservation projects. Emphasis on national funding sources for
digitization and preservation grants, the National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the National
Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). The workshop includes
matching your institution’s project with the appropriate funding
agency and preparing to write a proposal. Outcome: The ability to properly
choose and prepare a grant proposal including evaluating appropriate funding
sources and master grant preparation.
