Governance: About PORTALSMISSIONPORTALS is a library consortium committed to meeting the research and educational needs of people in the greater Portland area through cooperative and creative access to information resources and services. BACKGROUNDThe Portland Area Library System (PORTALS) is a cooperative endeavor of institutions in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area to provide improved library and information services. Our goal is to create the capabilities of an electronically accessible research library through shared resources of both public and private institutions. Initially PORTALS provided online access to selected electronic databases, reciprocal borrowing, improved inter-library loan and document delivery services, cooperative collection building, and continuing education for staff and users of Portland area libraries. Initial funding for PORTALS was provided by the State of Oregon, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, and member institutions. PORTALS services are intended for use by clients of participating libraries in the Portland metropolitan area.
